Uncategorized Widespread Chaos in Mexico After Killing of Drug Lord El Mencho — Tennis Stars and Tourists Stranded, Travel Disrupted by Taylor Ross February 23, 2026 written by Taylor Ross February 23, 2026 0 comments 1.3K A dramatic wave of violence has erupted across Mexico in the aftermath of the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, the notorious leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), one of the country’s most powerful and dangerous criminal organizations. The unrest has paralyzed major regions, disrupted travel, and left both residents and visitors fearing for their safety. Military Operation That Sparked Violence On 22 February 2026, Mexican armed forces launched a high-risk operation in Tapalpa, in the western state of Jalisco, with the objective of capturing the long–sought cartel boss. El Mencho — a former police officer turned drug lord long wanted by Mexican and U.S. authorities — was fatally wounded during the operation and later died while being flown to Mexico City. In clashes that followed the raid, several cartel members were also killed. Security officials confirmed heavy fighting, explosions, and vehicles set ablaze near the site of the operation. Retaliation — Chaos Across Multiple States Once news of El Mencho’s death spread, supporters of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel launched coordinated acts of violence and retaliation in at least eight Mexican states, including Jalisco, Michoacán, Aguascalientes, Guanajuato, Tamaulipas, and others. Cartel members and armed groups: Blocked major highways with burning vehicles Set cars, buses, and trucks on fire Created roadblocks and barricades to disrupt mobility Launched attacks on security forces and infrastructure Videos circulating online showed thick plumes of smoke rising over streets, highways blocked by burning wrecks, and panic among civilians trying to find safety. Public Safety Alerts and Travel Disruptions The violent backlash triggered international safety warnings. The U.S. government advised American citizens in several Mexican states — including Jalisco, Tamaulipas, Guerrero, Nuevo León, Michoacán and others — to shelter in place and avoid non-essential travel due to ongoing clashes and crime-related instability. Multiple major airlines, including United Airlines, Air Canada, Alaska Airlines and American Airlines, canceled flights to and from key destinations such as Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara and other affected airports, leaving travelers stranded and operations disrupted. In Puerto Vallarta — a popular tourist destination — videos showed passengers running through airport terminals amid confusion and heightened tension. Many hotels, shops and services also closed temporarily due to safety concerns. Top Athletes and Sporting Events Disrupted The violence has had a knock-on effect on sporting events originally scheduled in Mexico this week. Two professional tennis events — one on the ATP Tour in Acapulco and another on the WTA Tour in Mérida — were postponed or canceled amid rising security fears. Prominent tennis players — including Alexander Zverev along with other top ATP and WTA stars — were reported to be stuck in Mexico, unable to leave the country due to airport closures and blocked roads. Commentators and fans have called on tournament organizers to arrange evacuation flights to get players safely to upcoming events like the Indian Wells Masters in the U.S. One sports commentator described police activity at airports as “chaotic” and urged officials to dispatch planes for stranded athletes. Public Life and Sports Halt in Some Areas The unrest has spilled over into other parts of daily life. In Mexican football, matches in several states were suspended after gunfire and chaotic scenes erupted near stadiums. During one women’s league game in Aguascalientes, gunshots heard outside the stadium triggered panic among spectators and players, briefly halting play before matches resumed. Official Response and Warnings Mexican authorities have urged citizens to stay calm and adhere to official safety advisories. Security forces have been deployed to try to restore order, and government officials emphasized ongoing coordination among federal and state agencies to contain the unrest. Despite these efforts, the death of El Mencho — long a symbol of cartel power and influence — is widely seen as creating a leadership vacuum within the CJNG that could trigger further violence and turf battles among rival factions. Context: El Mencho and the CJNG El Mencho had long been one of Mexico’s most wanted criminals. His cartel was deeply involved in the trafficking of fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine and other illicit drugs, both domestically and into the United States. The U.S. government once placed a $15 million reward for information leading to his capture. Security experts warn that the cartel’s widespread network and semi-autonomous armed cells are capable of launching rapid retaliation without centralized orders, explaining how violence spread so quickly after his death.
