The preliminary autopsy into the death of actress Hayden Panettiere has revealed one important detail: investigators found no signs of trauma that contributed to her death.

Panettiere, best known for her roles in Heroes and Nashville, died on August 16, 2026, at the age of 36. She was found unresponsive at a residence in Greenville, South Carolina, where she had been staying temporarily.

According to the Greenville County Coroner’s Office, emergency responders arrived at the residence at approximately 1:51 p.m. and found Panettiere in cardiac arrest. Advanced life-support measures were attempted, but resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful. She was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m.

Preliminary autopsy rules out trauma

The initial autopsy did not identify any signs of trauma that could have contributed to Panettiere’s death.

Authorities have also said there is currently no indication of foul play. However, the preliminary findings do not establish what ultimately caused her death.

“The cause and manner of death” remain under investigation, with additional testing still required before an official determination can be made.

That means speculation surrounding the circumstances of her death should be treated cautiously. While reports have pointed to an apparent overdose based on 911 dispatch audio, this has not been confirmed by the coroner as the official cause of death.

What happened at the Greenville residence?

Police and emergency medical personnel were called to the residence after a report of an unresponsive woman.

When responders arrived, Panettiere was already in cardiac arrest. Despite attempts to revive her, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities have not publicly released a final explanation for what caused the cardiac arrest. Further examination and laboratory testing are expected to provide additional answers.

A career that began in childhood

Panettiere began working as an actress when she was a child and went on to build a career spanning television and film.

She became internationally known for playing Claire Bennet on Heroes, before taking on one of her most acclaimed roles as country singer Juliette Barnes on Nashville. Her performance earned her two Golden Globe nominations.

Her film credits included Remember the Titans, Ice Princess, Scream 4 and Scream VI, among others. She also lent her voice to Dot in Pixar’s A Bug’s Life.

In 2026, Panettiere published her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, in which she spoke openly about addiction, postpartum depression, motherhood and the difficult experiences she had faced throughout her life.

Her daughter and family

Panettiere leaves behind her 11-year-old daughter, Kaya, whom she shared with former fiancé Wladimir Klitschko.

Her younger brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, died in 2023 at the age of 28. His death was attributed to cardiomegaly and complications involving his aortic valve.

For now, investigators have confirmed only what the preliminary examination has established: there were no signs of trauma contributing to Hayden Panettiere’s death, while the exact cause remains pending further investigation.

More definitive answers are expected once the remaining medical and laboratory examinations are completed.
