Music Bonnie Tyler, the legendary voice behind Total Eclipse of the Heart, dies at 75 Bonnie Tyler, the legendary voice behind Total Eclipse of the Heart, dies at 75 by Amauri Barbosa- Vieira July 9, 2026 written by Amauri Barbosa- Vieira July 9, 2026 0 comments 592 Music legend Bonnie Tyler, the Welsh singer whose unmistakable raspy voice defined some of the biggest hits of the 1970s and 1980s, has died at the age of 75. The iconic performer passed away in a hospital in Portugal after complications from a serious illness, just weeks after undergoing emergency intestinal surgery. Tyler had been hospitalized in May for emergency surgery and was placed in a medically induced coma during her recovery. Although her family later announced that she had regained consciousness and was showing signs of improvement, her condition remained critical. She died peacefully following further complications. Born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, Wales, Bonnie Tyler rose to international fame with her powerful, husky vocals—a signature sound that developed after vocal cord surgery in the late 1970s. Her breakthrough came with “It’s a Heartache” before she became a global superstar thanks to the Jim Steinman-written anthem “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” which topped charts around the world in 1983. She later scored another timeless hit with “Holding Out for a Hero,” featured in numerous films and television productions. Across a career spanning more than five decades, Tyler released 18 studio albums, earned multiple Grammy nominations and remained a hugely popular live performer, particularly across Europe. She also represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013 and was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for her services to music. She is survived by her husband, Robert Sullivan, whom she married in 1973. The couple had no children. Tributes have begun pouring in from fellow musicians and fans across the world, many describing Bonnie Tyler as one of the greatest voices of her generation. Her songs continue to resonate decades after their release, cementing her place among the most influential female rock singers in music history.
