The girls disappeared in the Cambridgeshire town of Soham and were later found dead in a ditch near an airbase in Suffolk. Huntley, who worked as a caretaker at Soham Village College, had lured the girls into his home before murdering them and disposing of their bodies. During his trial at the Old Bailey in 2003, prosecutors described him as “ruthless” and said his explanations were “desperate lies.” Huntley claimed Holly died accidentally after falling in his bath, but admitted killing Jessica by covering her mouth to stop her from screaming. He was convicted in December 2003 and ordered to serve a minimum of 40 years in prison, meaning he will not be eligible for parole until 2042.
