Mexico has been plunged into widespread violence following the death of the country’s most wanted drug lord, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho, leader of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

El Mencho was fatally wounded during a military operation aimed at capturing him in the town of Tapalpa, in the western state of Jalisco. Mexican authorities confirmed that four cartel members were killed during the clashes, while three army personnel were injured.

Cities Paralyzed by Retaliation Attacks

Following his death, cartel members launched violent reprisals across at least a dozen Mexican states. Armed groups set vehicles on fire, blocked highways, and attacked businesses and banks.

Eyewitnesses reported gunmen roaming the streets in several cities, including Guadalajara and the tourist resort of Puerto Vallarta. Thick plumes of smoke were seen rising above urban areas as fires spread.

Jalisco Governor declared a “Code Red” security alert, suspending public transport, cancelling mass events, and closing schools. Tourists described Puerto Vallarta as resembling a “war zone”.

According to Mexico’s security cabinet:

• Around 250 roadblocks were reported nationwide

• 25 people were arrested

• Nearly 20 bank branches were attacked

• Multiple shops and vehicles were set ablaze

International Warnings and Flight Cancellations

Several airlines, including Air Canada, United Airlines and American Airlines, cancelled flights to Jalisco.
The United States urged its citizens to shelter in place in several Mexican states, including Jalisco, Michoacán, Guerrero and Nuevo León.
The UK government also issued warnings advising travelers to exercise extreme caution.

US Intelligence Support

US officials confirmed that intelligence support was provided to Mexican forces during the operation.
White House Press Secretary stated that El Mencho was a top target for both Mexico and the United States due to his role in trafficking fentanyl into the US.

A $15 million reward had been offered by the US State Department for information leading to his capture.

President Calls for Calm

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said there was “absolute coordination” between federal and state authorities and urged citizens to remain calm and informed.

She added that most parts of the country were continuing normal activities despite the unrest.

Who Was El Mencho?

El Mencho, 59, was a former police officer who built one of the world’s most dangerous criminal organizations. His cartel controlled vast drug routes responsible for trafficking:

• cocaine

• methamphetamine

• fentanyl

into the United States and other countries.

Experts from the US Drug Enforcement Administration described the operation as “one of the most significant actions ever taken against drug trafficking networks”.

Situation Remains Tense

Although authorities say the situation is stabilizing, security forces remain deployed across affected states as investigations and arrests continue. Officials warn that further violence cannot be ruled out in the coming days.
