The Unforgettable Finale of the 2026 Grammy Awards

The 2026 Grammy Awards, a night filled with music, celebration, and unexpected moments, concluded with an incident that will be remembered for years to come. At the heart of this memorable evening was none other than the legendary Cher, whose mix-up during the Record of the Year announcement left the audience both stunned and amused.

The Live TV Mishap Heard Around the World

As the ceremony approached its climax, Cher took the stage to present the final major award of the night. However, the presentation did not go as planned. After some initial struggles with the teleprompter, Cher opened the envelope and mistakenly announced “Luther Gandross!” instead of the correct name. This error was not just a simple slip; it involved misidentifying the late Luther Vandross, a revered figure in the R&B music scene who passed away in 2005.

The actual winner was the song “Luther,” a powerful collaboration between Kendrick Lamar and SZA that pays homage to Vandross by sampling his vocals. The irony of the situation was palpable, given that the song intended to honor Vandross’s legacy inadvertently led to this mix-up.

Social Media Erupts with Reactions

The blunder quickly captured the attention of viewers worldwide, sparking a flurry of reactions on social media. Tweets ranged from humorous to sympathetic, highlighting the unpredictable nature of live television:

“Cher high as hell man”

“This got me hooting and hollering”

“Lord Cher just found out they passed away today lmaooo”

Handling the Unexpected

Despite the initial confusion, the situation was handled with grace and humor. Kendrick Lamar, the actual award recipient, responded with a chuckle before taking the stage to accept the honor. In his acceptance speech, Lamar made sure to acknowledge Vandross’s influence on the winning track, turning the awkward moment into a tribute to the legendary artist.

Cher’s Performance: A Series of Memorable Moments

The mix-up was just one part of a series of memorable moments involving Cher that evening. Earlier in the night, she was interrupted by host Trevor Noah to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award. Her acceptance speech, punctuated by a somewhat bewildered “Thank you. I guess I’m supposed to walk off now,” added to the night’s spontaneous charm.
